Bajhang is situated in a picturesque region of far western Nepal. The district’s administrative center in Chainpur boasts a rich historical heritage. Often referred to as the city of kings, it is home to numerous remnants of palaces and forts. Located along the banks of the Seti River, Bajhang is also renowned for producing exceptional fresh yogurt and milk.

Bajhang presents an intriguing destination for travelers, offering a variety of significant attractions, including sacred pilgrimage sites, historical landmarks, and opportunities for trekking.

Natural beauty

Bajhang is characterized by its stunning landscapes, featuring snow-capped mountains such as Saipal Himal, Sankhamala Himal, Lama Peak, and Ramkot Peak, among others. It is recognized as a district with extensive Himalayan trails. The highlands are abundant in wildlife, hosting species such as black bears, wolves, hispid hares, blue sheep, barking deer, and snow leopards.

The district’s natural splendor makes it an ideal location for adventure trekking. Notably, Bajhang is famous for Yarsagumba. In addition to its remarkable rock formations, nature-carved cliffs, vast grasslands, and beautiful lakes, Bajhang holds significant potential for tourism.

Mount Saipal

Standing at an impressive height of 7,031 meters, Mount Saipal is the second-highest peak in the Far Western Himalayas. Many climbers prefer it over the taller Mount Api due to the less demanding trekking route leading to its base camp.

The trail extends to the Urai Bhanjyang Pass, which serves as the primary access point to the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet.

Surmasarovar Lake

Located southwest of the Mount Saipal range, the enchanting Surmasarovar Lake sits at an altitude of 4,300 meters.

This lake not only possesses natural and historical significance but is also believed to have therapeutic properties. It is thought that bathing in its waters can alleviate skin ailments. Additionally, there is a legend that doing so pleases the Goddess Surma, who may grant one’s wishes.

Each year, around the end of July, a grand festival known as Birijaat is celebrated at this site, attracting thousands of pilgrims who come for a ritual bath during this annual occasion.
