Dupcheshwor Mahadev Temple travel guide

Located in the Nuwakot district of Nepal, Mahadev is a religious site and tourist attraction in the rural municipality of Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality-6, Nuwakot, Bagmati Province.

The Dupcheshwor Mahadev Temple, also known as “Little Pashupatinath,” is located in Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality-6 of Nuwakot District. Situated at an altitude of 4,000 feet above sea level, this temple can be considered as an unparalleled gift of natural beauty offering breathtaking views. This beautiful rock created by nature itself has always been dedicated to Lord Shiva’s divine blessing.

It is historically important not only for Nuwakot but also for the country. Legend has it that after consuming the Kalkut poison released during the churning of the ocean, Mahadev became disoriented and reached Gosainkunda via Pashupatinath and Dupcheshwor.

According to legend, four hundred years ago, a local Tamang cow was lost in the pasture and was found on the hills of Nuwakot, offering milk from all four udders. It is believed that Dupcheshwar Mahadev resides there. Therefore, a special fair is held every year on the day of Dhanya Purnima.

On the other hand, there is a popular rumor that Mahadev, who was sick after consuming the poison of Kalkut that emerged after the churning of the ocean, went to Dupcheshwar while going to Gosaikunda. Therefore, another legend is that Dudheshwar Mahadev was born in the same place, and later the name Dupcheshwar was corrupted and was named Dupcheshwar.

Thousands of devotees come here every year from various parts of the country, including the capital, Kathmandu, Dhading, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, Makawanpur, Gorkha, Chitwan, and other places, to celebrate the Dupcheshwar Mahadev fair.

This fair, which has great potential as a religious tourism destination, offers an interesting and unique display of the traditional culture of the Tamang and Sherpa tribes. The number of devotees who come to Dupcheshwar as Santaneshwar Mahadev is increasing day by day.

Since Dupcheshwar is also considered a center of faith for all religions, the locals demand that special initiatives be taken for the development of this area. Intellectuals believe that if religious and historical heritages like Dupcheshwar Mahadev are promoted and promoted, it will contribute significantly to the economic development of not only Nuwakot but also the national economy.

Details of other structures

Dupcheshwar was not man-made but was created thousands of years ago, and it is said that it was discovered only about four hundred years ago. It is currently being protected by the Dupcheshwar Area Development Fund. Keeping in mind the needs of the devotees who come to visit the temple, toilets and drinking water taps have been arranged at various places.

Dupcheswar Temple Park

Currently, Dupcheswar Park has been constructed here with the budget allocation from Dupcheswar Rural Municipality, Dupcheswar Area Development Fund, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Government of Nepal and it has reached the final stage of construction. In the middle of the park, a statue of Ganesh Pandit has been placed. That is why this park has been named Dupcheswar Ganesh Smriti Park. Pilgrims will be able to stay in this park, walk around, and even take photo shoots.

One hundred and eight water fountains

A 108-foot water fountain has been constructed in the courtyard of Dupcheswar Mahadev Temple. This water fountain will also take some time to complete, but the construction work is ongoing. This water fountain has been invested in this land in the memory of its deceased and in its own name. The Area Development Fund is managing it by charging 15,000 rupees for 1 water fountain.

Buddha Statue

A 6-foot statue of Buddha has been installed at a place near Dupcheswar Temple, which is known as Gagan Chaur. The statue was installed specifically so that Buddhists, when they come to this place, can not only see the Dupcheswar Temple but also the Buddha. It is hoped that this will help establish a relationship of world brotherhood and sisterhood.

Festivals

Every year, a special week-long fair is held on the occasion of Dhanya Purnima. About 1 lakh people visit the fair. The management of this fair is being managed by the Dupcheshwor Area Development Fund, Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality, and the Administration Office, Nuwakot.

The fair is completely secured by the local administration, Nepal Police, Nepal Army, etc. There are more than 500 stalls in the fair. All locally produced items find a place in the stalls. The specialty of this fair is that all household necessities are available from Doko Thunseh to Bhakari.

This fair, which has great potential as a religious tourism destination, offers interesting and unique exhibitions of the traditional culture of various castes, including Tamang, Sherpa, Brahmin, and Kshetri.

The fair is held on Maha Shivaratri, the month of Shravan, and every Monday and Saturday at the Dupcheshwor Mahadev Temple. Mainly childless couples come here to ask for children, and it is believed that after worshipping Mahadev, they will get children through divine power.

Route to Dupcheswar

The shortest and easiest road route to visit this temple, which is only 74 kilometers away from Kathmandu, Samakhushi, is the Samakhushi-Tokha-Chhare route. Using this route, you can reach Dupcheswar in two and a half hours by public transport. You can also easily reach here using your own vehicle. There is a paved road arrangement right up to the temple. After getting down from the vehicle, you can purify your body and mind in the famous Suryamati Ganga. And for Dupcheswar Darshan, you will definitely have to climb about 200 stairs. You will not feel any pain while climbing these stairs. The beautiful view here will make you forget all your tiredness and pain.
